Abandoned River Country Pool being Filled due to Zika Virus Threat

In the Disney Community, River Country is pretty much legend. Mainly because River Country was the first water park on Disney World property with a strange ending. It opened on June 20, 1976 and was near discovery island and had a rustic wilderness theme. Its fitting as its near Fort Wilderness Lodge and can technically still be accessed there despite fences in place.

It was described as an "old swimming hole" with a huckleberry finn twist. The water was was drained from bay lake and used a filtering system to keep the water clean but it didn't do it fully as in 1980 an 11 year old boy died from a deadly infection caught from bacteria in the water at the water park.

The water park closed in November 1, 2001 and was speculated to close seasonally as it did every year. But it never opened. On January 20, 2005 the company announced it would never open again and along with Discovery island it was left to rot rather than be demolished.

Rumors have swirled since 2010 that the water park would finally be demolished and converted into another DVC resort.

It was announced on August 25th that Upstream Plunge, the huge pool that was located at river country, could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are known to carry and transmit the recent Zika virus which has been spreading through miami and throughout florida.

With this possible threat in mind and safety being their number one concern for guests, they announced they would be filling the pool.
