Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America to reopen Summer 2017

Many guests were disappointed when Disneyland had to close Rivers of America and the Disneyland Railroad for a lengthy refurb. This coincided with the construction being done for Star Wars land at the park. But fortunately DisneyParks Blog announced yesterday that both the Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America would be returning Summer 2017!

This means the following attractions will be returning :

  • Fantasmic!
  • Mark Twain Riverboat
  • Sailing Ship Columbia
  • Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
  • Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes

This is the latest evolution for Disneyland's 60 year run as the new northern riverbank will enhance this classic waterway. Back in the day there was only one way to navigate these waters since opening day and that was the way of the Mark Twain Riverboat!

The following year in 1956, traffic on the river picked up when the Indian War Canoes (known now as the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes) and the Tom Sawyer Island Rafts were added.

In 1958, a new vessel joined the Mark Twain Riverboat. The Sailing Ship Columbia, a 18th century replica of the merchant vessel Columbia Rediviva. This vessel happened to be the first of its kind to circumnavigate the world.

In 1966, New Orleans Square was added and guests could stroll along the Mississippi River while enjoying live music (my personal favorite disneyland activity when i have downtime to do.)

But in 1992, the quiet New Orleans Square nights got more exciting with the addition of "Fantasmic!" nighttime spectacular.

And around this time next summer, guests can enjoy the refurbished Rivers of America once more with gorgeous new riverbank and elevated trestle in which the Disneyland Railroad will travel!
For now, guests can stop by the New Orleans and Main Street Train station stops to get up close with the steam trains!
